Crabbing

Crabbing is great fun and a classic seaside activity! The nearest places from here are Exmouth, Teignmouth & Axmouth

What you’ll need to go crabbing:

    Crabbing Gear

    • Bucket: Bigger is better (as crabs don’t like being overcrowded). The current guideline suggests a maximum of ten crabs per bucket.
    • Crab line: This is basically a piece of string or fishing wire, bait and a weight that is heavy enough to keep the bait down.
    • Net: As soon as you get the crab out of the water, it will try to jump off! The net helps to get the crab from your line and into the bucket.

    Culmstock Beacon

A wildlife haven with stunning views.

On the edge of the Blackdowns it has some of the most stunning views that inland Devon has to offer.

Wild ponies can usually be seen here.

In late summer it’s particularly beautiful when the bell-heather is in full bloom.

Culmstock Beacon is one of a chain of Elizabethan beacons used for lighting fires to warn of advancing enemies (such as The Spanish Armada.) The beehive-shaped structure was built of flint. It was rebuilt in 1870 after the collapse of the earlier one.

Culmstock Beacon is accessible via unmade public footpaths and bridleways.

Address: Culmstock Beacon, Culmstock, Cullompton EX15 3HP

      Distance: 25min drive

Parking: By road: No formal car park is available, and considerate parking along the narrow lanes leading to the common is required, or else park on the northern edge of Culmstock village and walk 1.5km to the site.… Read more

      Rhododendron Woods, Blackdown Hills ANOB

We love this woodland! It can be seen through the trees from the stream by the yurt.

Full of trails and paths for exploring or making dens (the evidence of others having done so is fun to see!).

Being set at the foothills of the the Blackdown Hills is such a gift for us and our guests 🙂

There’s a number of car parks with paths to Blackborough, the Gliding Club on North hill and many many interconnecting circular routes.

Address: There are a number of small unmarked car parks. This is the first of them click here for google map location.… Read more

        Queen’s Drive Space Playground

FREE – This Jurassic themed children’s playground is great. It’s on the sea front so good one to combine with an Exmouth Beach trip.

There’s a seating area, food stalls and a bar (tourist season only) – but loads of other places to get food when these food stalls are closed.

There’s a car park next to it – or loads of parking along the seafront.
